This is possibly related to the lack of SSE2.

So is this the end of VLC (updates) on this PC then?

CPU has SSE (not 2 AFAICT)

Well, we could debug it, maybe :)

Can you try a mp3 ?
Can you try a mp2v sample?

I've gone back to 2.1.1 but could try 2.1.2 again (for your tests) don't
think I have a mp2v, but do have mp3 & avi which both work !

BUT mpg's & mp4's both crash, did try to "send data to team" (or words to
that effect) but that gets a "FTP error ... thanks for your help"

What about 2.1.2 but taking the libavocec_plugin.dll from 2.1.1?

I think I have the same issue. On XP home edition, SP3. I have downloaded
both bad 2.1.2 and working 2.1.1 from portableapps.com. I think it
shouldn't make any difference because I am using portableapps.com for a long
time, and for many apps. I also reverted back to portableapps.com's 2.1.1.
You suggested Jean-Baptiste Kempf to try some more formats. I am not sure
what video format I use. I mostly copy-paste youtube direct URLs to watch
videos. Can you post specific links to URLs of different video formats so I
can try some? How can I tell which format a random video is in?

Please try some ogg/theora/vorbis files. They should be not affected.

I think I fixed the issue for 2.1.3

Indeed 2.1.2 didn't crash with
http://www.vorbis.com/music/Epoq-Lepidoptera.ogg .
portableapps.com still doesn't have 2.1.3. I prefer their packaging, though
I am not sure what
are the differences with respect to dowloading from other sites. I will
update here once I have
their 2.1.3 version.

But Super Useful VLC Features!) with 2.1.3.

Maverick X.9.1

Mostly mov, avi and mov

And not auto-showing subs - needs to be selected.

Sometimes no audio. Dump .plist - sound is back.

best

FYI, there are a 7z and ZIP packages at
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
Just extract the files and start the vlc.exe, no installation needed.
You canextract as many instances and versions as you have hard drive
space.

Regards,
David

What about not writing MS registery records, no need for administrator
privileges, letting the user detremine the top level directory under
which the package will be installed, writing some files not under the
top directory the user has specified, and similar actions which makes
it harder to track the installed files?
In any case, are these answers a faq, or otherwise mentioned on the
site?
