----------
After a long, long, long while, version 0.2.60 of the VideoLAN Client
(vlc) is out. A lot of new features have been added since the 0.1.99
series, and the program is faster as well.
Amongst the hot news, we now have MPEG 1 support, direct DVD support,
encrypted DVD support, fast forward and slow motion, hardware YUV
acceleration through the SDL library, arbitrary seeking in the stream.
Loading Image...
We lost a few features in the process (TS input, GGI, plain X11,
framebuffer output) because these modules haven't been ported to the new
client structre yet. We are all working on this.

ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/0.2.60/
We now have the official authorization from our director to
distribute VideoLAN under the GPL, which means that the development is
going to be more open and hopefuly more active. The CVS repository has

I run Slackware Linux 7.1; SDL and Gnome are installed.
The computer is a Sony Vaio Notebook (PCG-F350); CPU is PII, 366 MHz;
the drive is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2202.
Please let me know if you need any further information. I certainly
offer any help I can give to you.

Keep up the good work!

Either add the dependency or do a 'make all install'.

work fine. I also run at 24bpp which does not cause much of a problem
with vlc - the only thing which occasionally is slightly annoying is
that some colors of other windows get messed up due to overlay.
I run SuSE 7.0 with the old glib 2.1 (I think) but I don't think
that the problem lies there.
Could it be that you use vlc successfully, then suspend your A20p,
go home, resume your notebook and things are messed up? Although I
Hmm... Yes.. But the first time it actally worked, I'd done that as well.
Added to that last night I did restart X but it still took a while to get
it working... Maybe it's a combination of the gamma getting screwed AND the
X server had been suspended... I'll have to play... Failing that I'll have
to read some more code...
have now, after some time, managed to get quite a stable suspend/resume,
Mine is stable. The only real problem I've had is APM getting in the way...
It would try & kick off a copy of xscreensaver, and lock up... No kbd or
video, but still running... Thank goodness for network connections eh?
I have the feeling that it is not (yet) perfectly safe.
If the answer to the above question is yes, simply try to restart
the X server after resume and check whether the problem persists.
Otherwise, forget about this email.

Support available for DVD-ROM
- You can read data from DVD-ROM discs in a default configuration.

Experimental support available for multisession CD-ROMs
-You can read multisession CD-ROM discs using the raw access mode. Use the
Configuration Editor (Settings > Configuration Editor) to set your virtual
DVD/CD-ROM drive to use this mode.

Does this mean that direct access is allowed? Is there a simple .c program
that I can run to check? Can someone send it to me?

Do the latest versions of VMWare allow direct access to the hardware? I

You don't really need it because the OS X port has its own native video and

might want to install it.

(try it with the installed version, of course).
So, I tried --intf gtk and had no luck, same with --intf
intfwin32. Neither one was found.
Seems logical :-)
Good luck. If you want specific errors I can uninstall msys and mingw
(which I probably will anyway) and do it all from scratch.
Well, we can't help you much if you don't give us the errors...
I would have sent logs of the output but msys apparently does not
allow any text copying from its interface, so I'd have to use
printscreen image files. Great tool there....
Hum.... to copy text, just select it...
And you can paste in msys using the middle mouse button.

******* VideoLAN documentation ********

The VideoLAN documentation has moved to Docbook XML and now welcomes all
translations. The VideoLAN FAQ has already be translated into Spanish
and French:

http://www.videolan.org/doc/

If you are willing to translate documentation, please contact
<www-doc at videolan.org>.

The official documentation only deals with the command line interface of
VLC, and can't speak about all the tips and tricks that are specific of
each operating system. We now have a VideoLAN Wiki for this purpose:

http://wiki.videolan.org

We hope you'll enjoy these new releases, and don't forget that
contributions (especially on the code, the translations, the
documentation and the Wiki) are always welcomed !

truetype fonts it can use any size. Please download a newer version.

Sigmund
Hi there...
Been using this amazing piece of software just for 4.5 hours now, and
its incredible that it really plays every file i throw at it...
Only thing is the subtitle font. I've been searching for a way to reduce
its size, but only thing I come up with is that file in my share dir I
think. Now I've been searching for another file with smaller font or a
program to edit the file, but I keep getting nothing. Could you tell me
where I can find several fonts, or just a smaller one then the standard
I downloaded from one of the mirrors?
Thanks a million in advance.
Greetings,
Martin

sending all content using 3 Transprt streams so I guess that I need at least
3 DVB-T cards. But is the Haupage nova-t card or any other capable of
delivering the whole transport stream down to the driver layer?

What card if all above questions can be solved would you recommend?

Is someone making a software descrambler? (This could ease my headache)

Thanx for any answer,

downloaded from the net each and every one had some
warnings that and enabled disabled options that i
ignored ,.,,, especially the downlaoded source coded
lame (mp3lame) and also the mpeg2dec i had to get into
the source code especially the cvs one.... the trick
is only in the bootstrap and configure files....

Nevertheless I will parse the changes i did later on
.... Cause today am at my office at the airport once
i'll get home to the platform i will post it in....

Still I have one comment which is whenever i change
want to mp4v the audio is gr8 but i have no video
output .... i can see that there is a track but i
don't see any video ....

one question , does vlc under windows support mp4v
viewing ????????

I'll be back within 5 hours around 5 GMT time ...
Best Regards
F.B.
One More thing I know I ask too much but this is
me,
:) I need a full coverage on the codecs used with
vlc
especially vcodec=.... cause it seems the only
codec i
can use to be able to stream video is mpgv ,,, i
was
never able to stream with mpg4v ,,, never theless
also
when i use a local file on the harddisk and stream
it
i usually put "acodec=mp3,ab=128" but when i look
in
the log i see mpga with 48000 Mhz and 384 Kb which
brings also questions and suspects to my curious
mind.....
The name of the MPEG4 codev is mp4v. In order
to transcode in mp3,
you need to have lame on the computer,
compile ffmpeg with the
--enable-mp3lame option, and vlc with the
--with-ffmpeg-mp3lame option

And which stream output method are you unsing
exactly (which=
method of transcoding, notably ?)
As I told you I tried all stream=
ing methods without success.
In particular I'm trying http stream me=
thod with avi (encapsulation), mp4v
(video codec) and mpga (audio co=
dec).
Thanks again
Ogee
You can't stream avi (avi=
only works if you output to a file because an
index of the complete =
file needs to be put as an header).
Try streaming in Ogg or MPEG T=
S.

7)http://localhost:1973/ don't work
8)http://localhost:8080/ works again!!!

I use vlc 0.7.1
=20
How to proceed?
=20
The VLC config is account specific so you need to make sure the account =
used=20
for the service is the same as the one you used during your "vlc=20
--save-config" manipulation.
You can also alternatively copy the resulting config file to the right =
place=20

I have a question regarding streaming and v.o.d.
What is currently your best codec for doing video streaming assuming
VideoLan as server and VLC as client) ? (Which for video, which for
audio, which container).
As for the container, MPEG transport stream is pretty much standard
for streaming. You also need to choose a delivery protocol, such as
RTSP.
I heared H.264 is really ahead of other codecs in term of quality vs
bandwidth.
Sure is. Beats WMV9 hands down IMO.
How does that relate to your best supported codec ? Is there any
plan for supporting H.264 as well ?
It's already supported.

system('vlc -I http --http-src /var/www/simula/VLC --http-host 192.168.0.7

I know that the daemon is start. I want to control this daemon from PHP
clicking the PLAY button. Now, when it click this button, the PHP program
does this:

<vlc id="control" param1="play" param2="simpson.avi">
<vlc id="set" param1="sout" param2="udp:192.168.0.255">

I suposse that this is incorrect, because in the client machines (they are
waiting for a streaming) not happend anything.

I want to know if exist the posibility of do what I desire.

If the answer if 'yes', please can you write an example?

Thanks for your time.

did not understand your full streaming chain! :-)
I would try changing some parameters such as codec and/or bitrates.

through a Windows 2000 streaming server also counteracts the PTS
problems
slightly but this is probably only because an additional buffer/delay is
introduced.

On a side note it would be nice to have Windows 2003 servers "listen" to
VLC
http streams as well for relaying purposes. Somehow that doesn't seem to
work
because of some initial HTTP request/negotiation that goes wrong.=20

I believe the following threads on the VideoLAN forum also point to this
issue:

Onderwerp: [vlc] frame freeze or show errors?

Hi,

I did next experiment:

Stream a wm9 sequence from windows media server (mms) to VLC with
packet
loss: No blockyness only frame freeze (I get a lot of PTS warnings.)

Stream a DivX sequence from VLM (rtsp) to VLC with packet loss:
Blockyness no frame freeze (errors are shown)

Now my question is:
Who determines what happens when packets are lost?

I thought the player decided whether it displays errors or whether it
drops erroneous frames. But clearly this is not the case. Could you
tell if it is codec, streamer or access protocol dependend. I do not
think it depends on the access protocol cause:

Streaming a wm9 sequence from windows media server (rtsp) to windows
media player : no blockyness, only frame freeze.

Streaming a wm9 sequence from windows media server (mms) to windows
media player : no blockyness, only frame freeze.

any information is welcome,

regards, Philippe

telnet server 4212 results in no response from the server. I get the
password prompt, but it ends there.

When I telnet from either the server, or the winxp machines, I can enter the
password, then control livetv play, and all works great! VLC on the linux
diskless computer and winxp machines, as the client, is clean and crisp.

Does anyone have any idea what could go wrong with bidirectional
communications on the telnet interface from certain linux machines?

I'm going to start adding debugging to the code to try and track this down.

The --vlm-conf <file> option should make the trick.

(underperforms) 4 times than your result. How can we
fine tune to achieve the results you have got?

What SATA HDD you use, plz mention that.

Hi all,
I am using the VLM plugin of VLC (telnet interface)
for a video on
demand application.
I have managed to (UDP) stream up to 20 videos
simultaneously without
problems. However, when I try a higher number of
streams, the VLC stops
streaming (although the telnet interface reports
that the status of the
streams is "playing").
Is there a known value of maximum concurrent streams
that the VLC can
handle?
Memory and CPU usage seems OK on the server.
Regards,
Alex

All the rc command work well. I can start reading the dvd on myhost, change
chapters, controle volume, etc.

But the menu command does not seem to work.

I issue in telnet the commands "menu select/up/down/on/off/left/right" when
myhost displays some menu of the dvd and nothing happens (the menu selection
does not change). I get the following errors in the vlc terminal on myhost :

[00000275] main interface error: osd_MenuNext failed
[00000275] main interface error: osd_MenuDown failed
[00000275] main interface error: osd_MenuPrev failed

On the remote host, I don't get any error. Each menu command outputs
menu: returned 0 (no error)

This is a shame because the rc interface does not control languages and
subtitles, so the menu command is necessary to achieve this.

vlc version is 0.8.4-svn20040920
Any help is welcome

Guillaume

with their own Nagravision2 and the receiver/smartcard pair contain the
keys to decrypt the signal.&nbsp; A similar system could be possible with
VLC either built-in or using a separate proxy-type program.&nbsp; I'll
outline the proxy program because to me, it would seem more versatile.<br>
<br>
A server program, preferably commandline, would take the video stream
and a user provided key (either, on the commandline or from a file) and
output an encrypted stream.&nbsp; This program could be run on the same
system or a separate system as a proxy to the stream.&nbsp; On the user end
the same program would act as a second proxy and retrieve that
encrypted stream and use the provided key to decrypt the signal:<br>
<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; VLC ---&gt; Encryption Proxy ---&gt; Decryption Proxy ----&gt;
VLC/Media Payer/Real Player/Etc...<br>
<br>
A system like this would allow for multiple inaccessable streams coming
from within a private network running through a single (or multiple)
accessable proxy system on the web.&nbsp; The client could either have an
installed program and be provided a key, or the program could be a
binary on a USB dongle with the key built-in (in the event that the
person providing the stream doesn't want to divulge the key).&nbsp; Using
the second method, the client could tune in to streams represented as
"channels" on the dongle.&nbsp; These "channels" would merely be shortcut
URLs through the client proxy back to the proxy server's output streams.<br>
<br>
(This should probably be on the development mailing list, but since the
topic was brought up here, I wanted to add to it)<br>

We could add GPG keyrings support for SSL authentication as well, but
that is a &#8220;proprietary&#8221; or at least non-standard (though LGPL'd)
extension of SSL/TLS that only GnuTLS implements.

For now, you should be able to use a CA and give certificate/private key
pairs to any of the client you want to grant access to said video.
However, I've never tested that succesfully, and in any case, the
access control will be limited to granting access to all videos or no
videos at all, to any given client.

There could be better alternative, but I don't know any standard, nor
anyone willing to dedicate time into that.

However, Windows Mobile is based on Windows CE to a certain extend, =

If they were different, can anyone give me the link to the files =

Thanks.

It may interest you to know that after downloading your piece of garbage,
